The Cannes Film Festival is a prestigious, star-studded event that takes place each May in the resort town of Cannes, France. This year’s festival runs from May 12-May 23 and celebrities from around the world are descending on Cannes to participate in the festivities.

The Cannes Film Festival is one of the oldest and most prestigious film festivals in the world and is an important showcase for European films. The top award of the festival is the Palme d’Or or Golden Palm award. Approximately 20 films compete for the Palme d’Or and the winner is determined by an international panel of art and film personalities. This year’s panel includes director Tim Burton, who is serving as President, and American actress Kate Beckinsale. Two Russian films are in the running for this year’s Palme d’Or. They are: Utomlyonnye Solntsem 2: Predstoyanie (The Exodus: Burnt by the Sun 2) and Schastye Moe (My Joy). Other Cannes awards include Grand Prize of the Festival, Jury Prize, Best Short Film, Best Screenplay, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, prizes for student films, and many others.

The Cannes Film Festival enjoys massive media coverage and is only open to accredited film industry professionals. Many film producers come to the festival in an attempt to sell their work and many movie stars also attend the glamorous event.
